The top 5 things I look to capture while photographing your event
A successful photo is an amalgam of small details. The top five elements that I look to capture when photographing an event are: a story, emotion, energy, a connection between attendees, and the branding of the event.
Aside from capturing the overall story behind the occasion, I look for smaller stories within the event. These can come in the form of a moment between attendees, the look of excitement on the host’s face when they know they have created something successful, or a behind the scenes view of the event space before the guests have arrived. Telling a story through an image leaves the viewer with a sense of both familiarity and curiosity about the event.
A photo can convey the emotions of the event in ways that words cannot. A corporate event may not seem like the most likely avenue for a moving photo, but capturing an image of smiling guests or a contemplative moment of silence can touch a part of the viewer that may not have otherwise been reached. At the same time, I also look to capture the energy of the event, whether through a fun photo showing a rowdy employee party, or a more serious image of a corporate meeting.
Capturing a moment of connection between attendees humanizes the event, adding to the emotion and showing the viewer something other than the formal side of the occasion. Events are about human connection, so showing the viewer a meaningful moment amongst guests can make them feel like they were there in person.
I also look to capture images that can be used in branding for future events. Photos that clearly show who is hosting and sponsoring the event, and communicate the event’s success, can be used in marketing materials in the future to attract guests and additional sponsors.
Capturing all of these elements together creates an impactful image which can be used to look back and remember past events, while also looking forward to promote events in the future.
